A window grill gets cut, bent, hammered and welded into shape before it is fixed permanently into the wall. That means the steel needs to be strong enough to resist a forced break-in, but soft enough to bend into scrolls and patterns without cracking at the weld.

Frames matter just as much as the grill pattern itself. A window frame built from inconsistent or poorly finished angle sections can throw off the whole installation, leaving gaps, misalignment, or a grill that never quite sits flush.

A window grill and frame does not need much upkeep if it is built right. A wash down every few months clears off dust and grime before it can trap moisture against the surface. Check the paint at the joints once a year — that is usually where wear shows up first.

If you do spot a scratch or a chip, touch it up quickly rather than waiting. A small area is easy to sand and re-prime. Left alone through a monsoon, it can spread.
